MATHEMATICAL MODELING OF A CASSAVA DRYER

CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Inability to preserve effectively, excess farm products is one of the biggest problems that farmers, many of whom are peasants in developing countries face of which Nigeria is not excluded. Preservation equipment are not readily available to these farmers and even when they are, the cost of procurement, maintenance and even operation is usually unaffordable to these farmers, many of whom lives in less than 500 naira per day.

In as much as this is a problem of the government and financial institutions, it is even more so a problem of engineers upon whose shoulders hang the challenge of developing machines that will not only be affordable but also easy to operate.

The study examined appropriate agricultural extension technological needs of users in cassava processing activities in Nigeria. Technology has made pertinent contributions to national progress and its usefulness has attained universal recognition both at national and international levels. In many developing countries, including Nigeria, lack of appropriate technological and scientific knowledge application limits agricultural and economic progress. In order to keep pace with the rapid rate of food demand, that is attendant upon rapid population growth and help to improve the gloomy food situation and consequences. Continuous research in food production and efficient extension services is highly desirable.
