1.1 Background to the Study
A survey of communication disordered children and their management in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State.
The capability of humans to acquire language and use it as an instrument for communication is the most unique or distinctive feature which makes man different from other living organisms. Effective communication is the exchange which includes our capacity or ability to express and create ideas, concepts with sufficient or adequate clarity to be understood and the ability to hear and understand what is being said to us other people.
Communication disorder involves a wide variety of problems in language, speech, and hearing. Gleanson (2001)defines communication disorder as a speech and language disorder, which refers to problems in communication and in related areas such as oral motor function. Communication disorders therefore are defects or abnormalities which partially or totally intorfere’s with the normal process of production, reception and/or comprehension of human communication. The delays and disorder can range prom simple sound substitution to the inability to understand or use language (most times their native language). It is a complex phenomenon which contains a wide range of problems affecting one or more of the physio-anatomical constituents of hearing, speech and language. All this defects are bound to happen in the “Critical Period” of child language development.
